Georgia traditionally is joining the World AIDS Day together with other countries. Georgia has joined the World AIDS Day Campaign in 1996. Annually December 1 is dedicated to special topic. “Stop AIDS, Keep the promise” is the slogan of World AIDS Day Campaign in 2005-2006.

World AIDS Campaign advocated with Governmental and all concerned partners to fulfill Commitment to UNGASS Declaration on HIV/AIDS, mainly:

  • Prevention;
  • Control;
  • Search for Vaccine;
  • Eliminating stigma and discrimination;
  • HIV/AIDS patients treatment and care;
  • Social and palliative care;
  • Protection of rights;
  • Employment;
  • Awareness.

Declaration of Commitments on HIV/AIDS priorities to enhancing the preventive interventions against HIV/AIDS, mobilization of resources for treatment, care and support for people living with HIV/AIDS, elimination of stigma and discrimination.

Despite of active effort of governmental and nongovernmental organization and health care workers AIDS is threatening world population. HIV/AIDS is remaining one of the greatest social, economic and health care problems.

Each year, UNAIDS provides updated information on HIV/AIDS epidemic around the world. According to UNAIDS Data:

  • More then 40 million people are living with HIV/AIDS in the world;
  • 5000 young people become infected every day;
  • 5 people dies from AIDS every minute;
  • 15 million children have lost one or both parents due to AIDS.

By November 22, 2006 a total of 1117 HIV/AIDS cases have been registered in the Infectious Diseases, AIDS & Clinical Immunology Research Center. The registered number of HIV/AIDS cases does not reflect the actual spread of the infection in Georgia. By experts consideration the estimated number of people living with HIV/AIDS is around 3 500.

World AIDS Day is the coalition day of world society against the global epidemic. Citizens, popular persons, businessmen and mass media must join to act against the AIDS epidemic.
